00 / Node Protocol
What it takes to open a node.
A node is not a house with a logo on it. Every location must pass the same five-part specification before the organism commits — each requirement load-bearing, none optional.
REQ_01
Terrain
Location-Specific Advantage
The city itself must be the accelerant: a vertical where local infrastructure, regulation, talent, or industry gives founders an edge they cannot get anywhere else.
Non-negotiable
REQ_02
Capital
Active Co-Investment Network
Local angels, funds, and institutions ready to co-invest alongside Haus Fund — so every demo day has a room of committed capital, not tourists.
Non-negotiable
REQ_03
Habitat
A 15-ish Bedroom House
Big enough to house a full cohort; intimate enough that the kitchen table stays the center of gravity. The house is the instrument.
Non-negotiable
REQ_04
Network
Vertical Partnership Support
An active partnership network in the node's specific vertical — labs, manufacturers, hospitals, regulators, associations — wired in before the first cohort arrives.
Non-negotiable
REQ_05
Talent
The Right People In The House
A Program Manager operating as a member of our team and a venture scout — plus an embedded scientific communicator producing media and video on the founders.

03 / The Playbook
How to open a Haus.
The Node Protocol above decides where a house can open. This is how you open it — the operating playbook for standing up a residency from an empty lease to a running cohort. Six phases, in order. None is optional.
Adapted from the open-source Residency Playbook (livetheresidency.com) for Haus Fund's live-in biotech model — where the house sits beside the bench, not just the desk.
PHASE_01
Getting started
Secure the lease, assemble the team, and fill the first cohort before move-in day.
  • Find the property. A 15-ish bedroom house near labs and transit — kitchen table as center of gravity.
  • Build the team. Program Manager, venture scout, and an embedded scientific communicator.
  • Attract residents. Open the application funnel; source through local labs, universities, and the network.
  • Pre-move-in. Leases, deposits, lab access, and a welcome pack ready before day one.
PHASE_02
Community
The culture is the product. Set it deliberately on the first night, not by accident in month three.
  • Set the culture. Shared dinners, demo nights, and a bias toward building in the open.
  • Code of conduct. Clear, written house norms — safety, respect, and lab etiquette included.
  • Conflict resolution. A named process for handling friction before it reaches the whole house.
PHASE_03
Operations
Keep the house full, fed, and running so founders spend their attention on the work.
  • Rent & utilities. Transparent per-room pricing that covers the lease and overhead.
  • Keeping the home full. A waitlist and rolling admits so no bed sits empty between cohorts.
  • Chores & upkeep. A shared rota; the commons stay usable without a manager hovering.
  • Chef & food. Communal meals — the highest-leverage line item for cohesion.
  • Amenities. Dry-lab workspace, fast internet, and quiet rooms for deep work and calls.
PHASE_04
Financials
Open without burning capital, then reach a model that sustains itself cohort over cohort.
  • Upfront costs. Deposit, furnishing, and lab setup — scoped before signing the lease.
  • Financially sustainable. Rent plus programming should cover operating cost at full occupancy.
  • Finding sponsors. Tooling, cloud, and lab-vendor partners who fund perks in exchange for access.
PHASE_05
Founder success
The reason the house exists. Move companies from angel to seed with traction they can show.
  • Founder traction. Weekly milestones, metrics, and a path to the next raise.
  • Mentors. Operators and scientists for startup and technical development.
  • Coaching. Personal development — the founder is the company at this stage.
  • VC relations. A room of committed local capital, wired in before demo day.
  • Founder resources. Lab access, legal, perks, and the wider Haus network.
PHASE_06
Programming
The cadence that turns a house of strangers into a cohort with momentum.
  • The cohort system. Fixed-length batches with a shared start, arc, and finish.
  • Core programming. Weekly build reviews, technical deep-dives, and office hours.
  • Events 101. Lightweight playbook for running a recurring public event well.
  • Fireside chats. Founders and scientists in the living room, not on a stage.
  • Demo day. The cohort's finish line — top residents fly to SF for the showcase.
